Milford Haven Amateur Operatic Society (MHAOS) was founded in 1950 and, since the very beginning, has had a strong guiding principle: to bring people together from the community who are united in their love and enjoyment of music, song, dance and performance.
We know that not everyone can excel in all of these areas but those who join us very often find their own special place in the Society and are encouraged to develop the particular skills they bring. We are a very friendly bunch and love to welcome new members who are enthusiastic and committed.
We are extremely fortunate in having a close and long standing relationship with the Torch Theatre in Milford Haven and it is there that we put on our annual show in Spring. The Society is very proud that it was the first amateur society to tread the boards there back in 1977 and it has been our home ever since. Members have the unique experience of working and performing in a professional theatre with all its wonderful facilities.
For a glorious week every year we amateurs can imagine we are on the professional stage and this gives us a real buzz!
Rehearsals for our ‘big show’ begin in September and auditions for leading roles usually take place at the end of the month. There are no auditions for those wishing to be in the chorus and you do not need to be able to read music to join us.
In addition to our main performance we also put on a concert at various venues around Pembrokeshire. This is an enormous amount of fun and rehearsals for these concerts normally start after the main show and run until the autumn. There is always a summer break to recharge our batteries. These concerts usually follow a theme such as ‘Songs from the Shows’ , or more recently 'As if we Never said Goodbye….', a return to performance after the pandemic.
A regular annual date is our ‘Christmas Songs and Carols’ charity event which we perform in various locations around Pembrokeshire- complete with bells, twinkly things and full Christmas regalia. We love bringing our society out into the community and hope that it creates some Christmas cheer for all that come to support us.
We enjoy socialising together beyond rehearsal times such as at quiz evenings, show film events and dinner dances.
Close, lasting friendships have been forged within the Society. We are a very inclusive group, spanning across all age groups and are brought together by our passion for this wonderful hobby.
Rehearsals are held at the Pill Social Centre, Milford Haven (SA73 2QT) every Tuesday and Thursday evening (September - March) between 7.15pm and 9.15pm.
Please do come and join us!
